Celebrate International Merlot Day with Gapsted Wines

Saturday 7th November is International Merlot Day - celebrate with a glass of Gapsted Wines today!

With its soft velvety milder flavour and lower tannin levels, this variety is hugely popular and always vying for the spotlight with Shiraz.

Merlot is planted primarily in vineyards of higher elevation, with well-drained soils that have good moisture-holding capacity. It is still the second most widely planted grape in the world, albeit its fall from trend in the last few decades, it has never been in better shape and is still widely sought after for body and softness for tasting and blending.

Merlot has a sense of elegance and refinement with medium tannins and not too much acidity, it pairs well from your charcuterie board to your main. Typical flavours are black cherry, raspberry, plums and cocoa, layered with notes of clove, vanilla and cedar when aged in oak.

At Gapsted Wines we love our Tobacco Road 2019 Merlot from the King and Alpine Valleys.
Showing ripe blackberry and fruitcake aromas our Tobacco Road 2019 Merlot has a fleshy palate, bursting with ripe plum and dark berry characters. Subtle oak imparts delicate spice and additional complexity, leading to a soft velvety finish.
For food matching think lamb - from a good ol' Sunday roast to a BBQ snag!

Merlot also lends itself to blending and our High Country 2018 Cabernet Merlot is a medal winner and Wine Club favourite!
Aromas of blackcurrant, cinnamon, cloves, vanilla and hints of chocolate lead to a round and fleshy palate that is full of richly flavoured red fruits and layers of finely textured tannins.
