The best 2018 North East Victorian wine you’ll drink is a bold and textural red from Gapsted Wines.
That’s according to the prestigious 2018 North East Victorian Wine Challenge, which chose Gapsted Wines’ High Country 2018 Tempranillo as ‘Best Wine of Show’.
The wine, which retails for just $20, was selected from entries in some of Australia’s top-rated wine regions, including Alpine Valleys, King Valley, Rutherglen, Beechworth and Glenrowan.
High Country 2018 Tempranillo won the top award after sweeping a number of categories, including Top Gold in the Tempranillo class, and trophies for Best Red Table Wine and Best Alternative Red Variety.
Gapsted Wines’ High Country and Tobacco Road Proseccos also won Gold Medals, giving the 21-year-old winery a total of three trophies and 15 medals at the Challenge.
“We’re turning traditional Tempranillo on its head and focusing on the wonderful fruit aromas and rich, textural flavours of the variety,” said Gapsted Wines’ Senior Winemaker, Michael Cope-Williams.
“It’s an unusual approach with such a highly regarded and long-established variety, so we’re overjoyed that both this release and the last one has appealed to so many people.”
The accolades for the 2018 vintage continue the success of the 2017 High Country Tempranillo, which also secured the 2018 King Valley Tempranillo Winery of the Year at the 2018 Melbourne International Wine Competition.
The 2017 vintage was also awarded a Silver medal at the North East Victorian Wine Challenge.
Gapsted Wines’ CEO and Chief Winemaker, Matt Fawcett, said the winery is proud to support such an important regional wine show.
“The Show is judged by a seasoned wine judge panel, which gives the results a lot of credibility,” he said.
"These results reinforce our commitment to producing high quality, cool climate wines that showcase the best this region has to offer.”
Gapsted Wines’ High Country Tempranillo can be purchased from our Cellar Door or online at www.gapstedwines.com.au, as well as a number of liquor retailers across Victoria.
