Introducing our new Tobacco Road 2018 Sangiovese Barbera
With our change of Vintage to our 2018 Sangiovese Barbera, and a refreshed Tobacco Road label, it’s time to delve into these two amazing Italian varieties and get to know them better.
Italian Mediterranean varieties are well suited to the Alpine Valley and High Country wine region, strongly influenced by the generations of Italian migrants that make it the culinary and viticulture region it is today.
Barbera is a cooler climate Italian red wine grape variety, originally from Piedmont, and further down the map, Tuscany is famous for its Sangiovese.
Here's what our Senior Winemaker Michael Cope-Williams has to say about it...
“2018 was a great year for reds – typically having more colour and richness than usual. We used 100% French oak for maturation for our Tobacco Road Sangiovese Barbera and the Sangiovese spent an extra 2 weeks on skins so the tannins are softer and more complex.
Typically, Barbera is described as having red cherry fruit flavours whereas Sangiovese is more black cherry flavours. The difference being red is up-front , fragrant, perfumed and spontaneous, black is still fragrant, but is much longer in the palate, shifting the attention away from the aroma to the texture of the palate. In essence, Barbera puts the flesh on the bones of Sangiovese, the sum giving a round, structured palate.
In contrast to its name (translated as Blood of Jupiter or Jove, the Roman God of Sky and Thunder), Sangiovese is quite pale in colour, but makes up for this in sheer weight of flavour and texture. Barbera on the other hand can be very dark but without a lot of tannin, and best drunk while young, making it an ideal partner for Sangiovese.
Our 2018 Tobacco Road Sangiovese Barbera is absolutely perfect for drinking now and for another 3 years. Cheers!”
