Your guide to the best of our 2018 vintage wines

As our 2019 Vintage commences in earnest, we thought it an opportune time to highlight some of the standout wines from 2018.

First on our list - and for good reason - is our High Country 2018 Tempranillo, winner of the Best Wine Of Show - 2018 North East Victorian Wine Challenge.

“We’re turning traditional Tempranillo on its head and focusing on the wonderful fruit aromas and rich, textural flavours of the variety,” said Gapsted Wines’ Senior Winemaker, Michael Cope-Williams, in December after winning the award.

“It’s an unusual approach with such a highly regarded and long-established variety, so we’re overjoyed that both this release and the last one has appealed to so many people.”

Crafted from King Valley-grown grapes, our Tempranillo displays a vibrant cherry red colour, and shows aromas of blueberry and black cherry with hints of ground coriander and chocolate. These aromas lead to a juicy and plush palate of dark berries, chocolate tannins and a rich, textured finish. Delish!

Moving to our white wines, Ballerina Canopy 2018 Chardonnay is a premium, well-weighted Chardonnay.

It's a wine that delivers on many fronts, from a nose that displays complex aromas of juicy melon, cashew and stonefruit with a hint of honey, through a palate that's layered with rich, creamy textures and fine acidity.

The Limited Release 2018 Fiano displays a bright yellow colour with green hues. The nose shows a unique combination of fresh lime, honeysuckle, nectarine and subtle tropical fruit. These aromas lead to a textural and lively palate with hints of stonefruit, lychee and fragrant spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon. The palate is beautifully rounded from ageing in seasoned French oak.

Reintroduced to our range last year, our Limited Release 2018 Gewürztraminer displays a golden-green colour. The nose shows fragrant notes of musk, ginger, rosewater, lychee and other exotic aromas leading to an exciting spicy piquancy on the palate that is interwoven with its supple fruit driven generosity.

It retains good freshness and a little texture to finish off the wine with a clean, satisfying vibrancy. Riesling drinkers in particular are likely to enjoy this wine.

It's good to drink now, although it will develop for another five years at least. Enjoy with a variety of foods, from soft cheese, light spicy food and all types of seafood.

The Tobacco Road 2018 Sauvignon Blanc shows lifted herbaceous and tropical fruit aromas. These aromas lead to a lively palate bursting with typical varietal flavours of passionfruit and gooseberry with citrus notes. A fresh and vibrant Sauvignon Blanc with a crisp, dry finish.

Great value at just $16 per bottle.

Our Valley Selection 2018 Riesling continues on from our award-wining 2017 vintage.

The nose shows refined floral aromas combined with zesty lime and cinnamon spice. These aromas lead to a palate with layers of complex crisp green apple, nashi pear and lemon, superbly balanced by clean, citrus acidity with great length and depth.

The 2018 vintage is a bit riper and less steely than its 2017 version, and a little more generous with ripe fruit flavours. This wine ages gracefully, and will continue to evolve in your cellar for up to 10 years.

Another to follow its successful 2017 vintage is our Tobacco Road 2018 Sangiovese Rose

This wine displays luminous crimson hues, while the nose shows fresh aromas of raspberry, cherry and watermelon. These aromas lead to a clean, luscious palate brimming with vibrant berry fruit. This wine has a crisp and slightly savoury finish with a smart, spicy edge.

The 2018 vintage is slightly lighter and finer than the 2017 vintage, and not quite as aromatically lifted. Again, a bargain at just $16 a bottle.

All of the above wines are available to purchase now online, or you can taste them for free at our Cellar Door.
